Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling-NMIT

NMIT will give you the skills you need to complete an apprenticeship as a wall and floor tiler. Tilers lay tiles on internal and external walls and floors to provide finishes that are protective or decorative, or both.

You will like this work if you:

* have good hand-eye coordination
* are able to work neatly and accurately.

You will be employed by a wall and floor tiler and train:

* on-site with your employer
* off-site at NMIT.

You will gain these skills and knowledge:

* performing measurements and calculations
* tiling ceramic, clay, slate, marble, glass, cork, linoleum
* occupational health and safety
* use of hand and power tools, including tile-cutting tools
* cleaning and polishing tiles
* preparing and applying grout
* using spirit levels, squares and plumb lines
* using small plant and equipment
* operating an elevated work platform
* tiling decorative mosaics
* tiling pools and spas
* installing marble floors.

Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing

If your work is waterproofing wet areas, you can get a Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing through Recognition of Prior Learning.

This is an assessment and skill gap training course. You will be assessed against criteria for 14 compulsory units and five electives.

Where there are gaps in your skills or knowledge, you will get extra training at NMIT.

Compulsory units include:

* Carry out measurements and calculations
* Read and interpret plans and specifications
* Prepare surfaces for waterproofing application
* Apply waterproofing process to internal and external wet areas
* Apply waterproofing remedial processes

Elective units include:

* Frame and fit wet area fixtures
* Apply basic levelling procedures
* Carry out basic demolition
* Operate elevated work platforms
* Manage small business finances.

The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Floor Tiling) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students through the Building Structures and Services Department.

NMIT will give you the skills you need to enter the building industry as a wall and floor tiler. Tilers lay tiles on internal and external walls and floors to provide finishes that are protective or decorative, or both.

You will be employed by a wall and floor tiler and train:

* off-site at NMIT

* scaffolding and levelling
* tiling substrates and adhesives
* using plant and power tools
* cleaning and polishing tiles
* preparing and applying grout
* concreting.

Top tiles DIY night courses - Australia.

Top tiles stores hold a DIY night once a month at each store. These sessions are always held on a Wednesday night once a month, starting at 6.00pm and ending about 8.30-9.00pm. We structure the content of the class around the style of job the attendees are undertaking. It is an excellent way to gain some insights to the ½ dozen “secrets” that make the difference between a handyman job and a skilled professional one.

If you have bought tiles from us, then the evening is free! If you have not bought yet, then we do charge a $40 fee which is discounted off any purchase (you can bring your partner free). On the night we also offer (for purchases on the night only) an exceptional 10% discount off all Glue, Grout and Accessories. The classes are held by skilled persons and it is not just sitting down watching a DVD as you might see at some hardware stores.

In order to attend it is very wise to register at your nearest store. We will call 2-3 days before hand to remind you and we will also confirm if you are coming along on the morning of the class.
